Common Weakness Enumeration: CWE-306: Missing Authentication for Critical Function
This vulnerability is being tracked by BUG1833882.

Description

On a VeloCloud Edge, an unauthenticated actor with network access to the private HA (High Availability) interconnect may trigger sensitive HA peer functions without verification. This could result in elevated command execution on Edge units where HA is enabled.

This issue was discovered internally by Arista, and the company is not aware of any malicious exploitation of this vulnerability in customer networks.

Required Configuration for Exploitation

Exploitation requires HA to be enabled and the attacker to have Layer 2 network access to the dedicated HA interconnect. In the VeloCloud Orchestrator, select the VeloCloud Edge and review its Device > High Availability configuration to determine whether Active/Standby HA is enabled. The standard direct port-to-port HA connection limits access; extending the HA connection through a shared switch or VLAN increases exposure.

VeloCloud

Indicators of Compromise

No reliable, vulnerability-specific indicators of compromise have been identified. In an VeloCloud Edge diagnostic bundle, unexpected HA management log entries containing Executing command '<command>' as requested by the active Edge should be investigated, particularly when the command is unrelated to expected HA operation. The absence of this message does not establish that exploitation has not occurred.

Customers with suspicious HA activity should contact Arista TAC.

Mitigation

Until an upgrade can be completed, customers should:

  • Use the recommended direct, dedicated port-to-port connection between the HA pair.
  • Do not extend the HA interconnect through a shared or user-accessible switch or VLAN.
  • Restrict physical and network access to the HA interfaces.

Resolution

Migrating to a patched software version for VeloCloud Edge is the advised course of action. Arista suggests that operators transition to the most recent release within a supported branch that incorporates the necessary remediations.

The vulnerability identified as CVE-2026-86106 is addressed in the following versions:

  • 7.0.0 and later releases
  • 6.4.2 and later releases in the 6.4.x train
  • 6.1.5.0 and later releases in the 6.1.x train
  • 5.2.7.0 and later releases in the 5.2.7.x train

Hotfix

No hotfix is available for this issue.
