Arista Delivers Two Millionth High Speed Cloud Networking Port
EOS Enhancements Enable Network Automation and Programmability
SANTA CLARA, CA-- February 4, 2014 --Arista Networks, Inc. today announced the crossing of another major milestone, shipping its two millionth, high speed, 10/40/100Gb Ethernet port for data center and cloud applications. This is being fueled by the increased acceptance of cloud computing and services, causing significant growth since the internet boom of the 1990s.
“We are pleased with the migration to modern data center and cloud platforms from legacy networks. This is providing significant opportunity for Arista’s disruptive innovations,” stated Jayshree Ullal, president and CEO at Arista Networks. “Arista EOS, coupled with advanced platforms, demonstrates our unwavering commitment to customers towards open standards and software defined networks (SDN).”
Smart System Upgrade: Key Network Application for Workflow Optimization
Arista introduces Smart System Upgrade (SSU), yet another network application delivered through Arista EOS that enables IT professionals and DevOps teams to automate and program the network’s operating behavior during change control, to align with the other mission critical systems in the cloud and data center. SSU works at multiple layers from orchestration platforms, ticketing systems and virtualization platforms all the way down to the network layer. Key examples of SSU components and features that enable a streamlined IT workflow are:
Orchestration Layer: SSU provides programmable interconnects with leading orchestration and DevOps automation systems such as Puppet, Chef and Ansible enabling systems to be dynamically re-balanced and re-positioned prior to any planned network outages.
Virtualization and Cloud Management Layers: SSU integrates with VMware, Microsoft System Center, and OpenStack so that virtual workloads can be migrated and positioned prior to planned network outages. Integration with the Automated Event Management system in Arista EOS also enables these workload re-balancing events to be triggered based on load, link availability, or other high priority conditions.
Network Layer: Arista EOS provides programmatic control over network topology structure enabling coordinated upgrades with adjacent switching and routing devices via its latest features. Accelerated System Upgrades: In the upcoming Arista EOS 4.14.1 release, SSU is being enhanced with a new feature that enables the network device to be restarted ‘in place’ with minimal disruption to any adjacency. This is designed to enable cloud environments to achieve the most stringent service-level agreements and enable enterprise-class cloud deployments.
Core Operating System Layer: Arista EOS’s foundation and multi-process state sharing system provide the ability for individual processes to be restarted, upgraded, and programmatically controlled to maintain maximum system uptime via its SFR/SFC (Software Fault Containment/Recovery Mechanisms). This self-healing architecture brings modern OS design principles to the networking industry improving system reliability and operational availability.
"Arista's SSU lets us customize our network exactly for our stack," said Artur Bergman, CEO of Fastly, the innovative CDN. "The shift we're seeing in moving from just configuring a network to being able to program one gives us a huge boost in efficiency, much better reliability and greater flexibility to respond to any changes we or our customers might need."
The combination of the Arista EOS core architecture, advanced network applications like Smart System Upgrade, and the commitment to supporting open standards and non-proprietary protocols, has enabled Arista to quickly establish itself as a leader in 10, 40, and 100Gb Ethernet – the high speed, portion of the 10B cloud networking market. In a recent test performed by the Lippis Report, the award winning Arista 7500E broke multiple test records and the report concluded that the switch retained its status as the most widely deployed spine switch in the 288 40GbE modular category.
